Category: Non-Fiction Drama

Synopsis: Hollywood Secrets is the story of Hugo and Loretta and their nefarious activities, their flight from the law and all respectability, and the consequences.

Hugo is the unacknowledged son of a Hollywood starlet who is married, for publicity purposes, to Tarzan. Hugo's biological father is a Hollywood cowboy, who followed Ronald Reagan to California and later disappears into the Pacific in WWII. Loretta is, possibly, the daughter of the starlet - or her hairdresser. As Hugo remarks, "They pass kids around out there in Hollywood."

Hugo is a reporter for the Poco City Chronicle, specializing in meetings of town council and sewers. Agnes, his wife, is a work of art in her own right; the result of a childhood marriage to a tattoo artist. They met during the time of the great road Disaster, which is likened to Armageddon - 47 killed, many many maimed. Hugo and Loretta become lovers, and when the police come seeking the beautiful woman cat-burglar, who works naked (What man is going to object when he finds a naked woman in his bedroom?), they flee into the night and a life of further crime - ending with stolen King Charles Spaniels which are used as blankets, while still alive.

Much of the book is set in the movies in which we all live.

Smoke

Director: Doug Sutherland
Producer: New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative
Music Production: youngmonkey
Distributor: New Brunswick Filmmakers' Co-operative
Category: Drama
Year of Production: 1990
Running Time: 10 minutes

Synopsis: Smoke satirizes the growing tendency in Canadian society to regulate virtually every aspect of life in Canada. While in past years, this has taken the form of government regulation, today the same ends are often pursued through the manipulation of the mass media. In many ways this is more effective and certainly more subtle.

Smoke is an attempt to point this out. It underscores the growing intolerance toward individuals who display what is perceived as anti-social behaviour - in this case, smoking in public.

The film follows the misadventures of one hapless individual who, despite his attempt to "obey the rules" is ultimately punished and brought to justice buy his peers - people who do not tolerate his wanton violation of their rights.
